The Kilimanjaro area (on the border with Tanzania) and Mount Kenya have an alpine climate.

Inland Areas

A more moderate climate, with high daytime temperatures and cool nights.

Coast

A tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity.

The best time to visit is from June to October, when the dry season provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. The period from December to March also offers good weather for safaris.

To enter Kenya, most international travelers, including Russian citizens, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) in advance.

Yellow Fever
When traveling directly from Russia, Europe, the UAE, or other countries outside Yellow Fever risk areas, a vaccination certificate is not required.
– A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers aged 1 year and older arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
– Vaccination is recommended for travelers aged 9 months and older visiting inland areas of Kenya or going on safari.
– Vaccination is generally not recommended for travel limited to Nairobi and most coastal resort areas.

Travelers may also be advised to get vaccinated against:
– Hepatitis A and B;
– Typhoid;
– Measles.

Safety

Although Kenya is considered relatively safe for tourists, follow standard precautions: avoid walking alone at night and do not display valuables.

The official languages are English and Swahili. Knowing a few basic phrases in Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated by local residents.

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is customary to leave 10% of the bill in restaurants and small amounts for taxi drivers.

Where and how to apply
For citizens of other countries
Most foreign citizens also obtain an eTA. Before submitting an application, it is necessary to check whether there is an exemption for your citizenship on the official portal.
For citizens of Russia
Citizens of Russia need to obtain a Kenya eTA in advance. Obtaining a visa at the embassy or upon arrival is usually not required.
  • international passport;
  • approved eTA;
  • return or onward ticket;
  • proof of accommodation;
  • confirmation of sufficient funds;
  • medical insurance – strongly recommended;
  • certificate of vaccination against yellow fever, if the tourist is arriving from a country at risk.

It is recommended that the passport be valid for at least six months after the intended date of entry.
Usually – up to three business days, however, it is recommended to submit the application at least 7–10 days before the trip.
Standard processing starts at approximately 30 US dollars. Regular processing takes up to 72 hours. Urgent processing may involve an additional fee of approximately 100 US dollars.
The application is submitted online through the official Kenya eTA government portal.

It is necessary to:
  • fill out the electronic application form;
  • upload the passport page;
  • upload a photograph;
  • provide proof of accommodation;
  • provide details of a return or onward ticket;
  • pay the fee by bank card;
  • receive confirmation by email.
Almost all foreign tourists, including citizens of Russia, must obtain electronic authorization before departure. An exception is provided mainly for citizens of the East African Community member states and certain exempt categories.

Mandatory vaccination for entry
For children from 9 months of age, the yellow fever vaccine may be recommended based on medical indications and the itinerary. The formal requirement for a certificate when arriving from a risk country begins at one year of age.

For a child traveling only to Nairobi or the ocean coast, the need for vaccination is assessed separately.
For most tourists, the following are considered:
  • hepatitis A;
  • typhoid;
  • hepatitis B;
  • up-to-date measles vaccination;
  • rabies vaccination – for prolonged safari, work with animals, trips to remote areas or limited access to medical care.
The vaccine is recommended for most tourists from 9 months of age visiting areas of Kenya where transmission of the infection is possible.

It is usually not recommended for a trip limited to:
  • Nairobi;
  • Mombasa;
  • Malindi;
  • Lamu;
  • most coastal areas;
  • the north-eastern counties of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa.

However, safari itineraries through the inland areas of the country may pass through territories for which vaccination is recommended.
When entering directly from Russia, European countries, the UAE, Qatar and other countries not belonging to yellow fever risk areas, a certificate is usually not required.

A certificate is required for tourists aged from one year, arriving from a country where there is a risk of yellow fever transmission. The requirement may also apply to previous stages of a complex African itinerary.
